On Dec. 18, Richland County held a ribbon cutting for the Alpine Road Sidewalk Project in Columbia. This Transportation Penny initiative will boost pedestrian safety in Northeast Richland and include newly constructed sidewalks, as well as pedestrian ramps, painted crosswalks and other features. As part of the project, Alpine Road has also been resurfaced from its intersection with Percival Road to Two Notch Road. Construction began last February and wrapped up in October.

The next day, Dec. 19, marked the groundbreaking of the County’s Atlas Road Widening Project in Columbia. This project will widen the current two-lane road to a five-lane roadway, from Shop Road to Garners Ferry Road. Pedestrian improvements, including new sidewalks, bike lanes, traffic signals and other elements, will also be included. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2027.
